Important tips to make your house cleaning job much safer

Domestic cleaning is important to maintain both a clean and safe environment. However, despite being a relatively simple task, it can also be quite dangerous if you are not careful. From toxic chemicals in cleaning products to complicated cleaning tools that can strain your body, there is a lot that can go wrong while you’re cleaning. Fortunately, I’ve compiled a list of useful tips to help you clean safely and efficiently:

1- Be careful when you mix products

Acids and bases are common ingredients in a lot of cleaning products. Alone, they work pretty well and many companies add in amounts that are low enough to remove dirt without destroying surfaces. However, mixing bases and acids can be disastrous. Whether it’s adding hard water to a drain cleaner or mixing vinegar and bleach, some chemical reactions are best left alone if you want to protect your health and home.

2- Be careful with your bleach

A lot of domestic cleaning products contain bleach as a key ingredient. While it does a good job of removing stubborn stains, grease and dirt, bleach can be a menace if you are not careful with it. In general, you should avoid using raw bleach alone and instead opt for products that contain smaller amounts that are mixed with other neutralising chemicals. It’s also best to never mix bleach with chemicals such as ammonia, rubbing alcohol or vinegar as this can cause a dangerous reaction.

3- Follow instructions on cleaning product containers

While this should go without saying, many people are tempted to become impromptu chemists and create mixtures and tricks that aren’t always safe or smart. I cannot stress enough, the importance of reading and following instructions, especially if you are using new tools or products that you aren’t familiar with. If the product is marketed as a drain cleaner, then it is just that and should never be used for anything else. It is better to spend extra money buying cleaning products for other surfaces than to use chemicals that can destroy your home or even worse, your body.

Staying safe while you clean is important and simple if you follow the above tips. You can also invest in your local cleaning services if you prefer to hand the job over to professionals who can ensure maximum safety and efficiency.
